new neighborhood emerges from the dunes of Strandeiland, shaped around nature as its foundation and future. The landscape sets the stage, while our ambition for ecological and social succession is woven through every design decision and programmatic choice.

Built entirely in timber and bio-based materials, Adam Ademt scales up our shared experience in sustainable and natureinclusive construction. By integrating nature and architecture at the scale of an entire neighborhood — developing both concept and business case, while organizing the production of timber and bio-based buildings—we contribute to a more sustainable building practice.

Adam Ademt is the winning proposal for the development tender of 190 homes, a community hub, and a daycare on plots M9a, M9c, M11a, and M11b in the Muidenbuurt, IJburg.

The starting point is a relaxed, sustainable, and connected community. Its atmosphere is defined by living with nature. Architecturally, this translates into a light and optimistic plan, with pavilion-like housing volumes oriented towards the surrounding greenery.

The subtle variations in elevation on the artificially created Strandeiland – a gradient from low to high and thus from wetter to drier – together with the buildings create conditions for diverse habitats. In this way, an ecosystem gradually takes shape that is climate-resilient, enhances biodiversity, and provides high-quality living environments for both people and nature.

On the landscape, a patchwork of interconnected indoor and outdoor spaces emerges. Residential buildings stand apart, as if they are guests within it. Around and between them, the landscape is arranged as green spaces, within a network of streets and paths as well as more intimate routes for residents. Wadis, hills, and hedges soften the transitions to the dwellings.

A key element in the plan is the porch: not only operating as a (climate) buffer between public and private space but providing an extra room for family life or just a moment to relax and enjoy.
