Zuideinde
Koog aan de Zaan, NL | 2020 - ongoing | 1.950m2
The project is located on the Zaan river, a place that has seen strong industrialization in the 20th century. The riverside is currently undergoing a transformation where old warehouses are either being repurposed or torn down for housing. On our plot, an old petrol station will be demolished to clear the way for 20 housing units in two volumes. The project will have to be very sensitive to existing buildings and it's historical context, restoring the view to the Zaan river.

Historic photograph of petrol station 'Vos' at Zuideinde 110-114. The building will be demolished to make way for the new housing project.
The architectural composition consists of two buildings: a robust apartment building inspired by the old warehouses and an elongated volume with a pitched roof. In between the two buildings sits a public pocket park.

Typical historic housing as found along the Zaan river. Mostly wooden and with pitched roofs, the view from the river is one of housing and industrial buildings in all shapes and sizes.

Walking along the Zaan river, it's fairly uncommon to be presented with an unobstructed view on the river. Most plots are built up with industrial buildings and private residences. The Zuideinde project aims to offer an alternative by offering the public not just a view, but also access to the riverside. With the different sizes of the two new buildings, we are looking for a connection with the existing urban fabric.
The smaller volume consists of row houses in two and three floors. The larger volume holds single floor apartments and several duplexes.
